Water Sources and Linguistic Diversity

In Brazil's current situation, it is becoming increasingly urgent to respect, protect, and value two fundamental assets: the diversity of our water sources, also referred to variously as “minas d´água”, “olhos d´água” or “nascentes” (more or less like "water mines", "water springs" or "springs") and the richness of our linguistic heritage, both plural and living. We aim to highlight the interconnection between ongoing science in the field of Literature and Linguistics and scientific and popular knowledge (traditional or contemporary) related to the world of water and, by extension, the environmental ecosystem. We will discuss with those visiting our booth, among other topics, the development of linguistic atlases (among them, the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil and the Ethnolinguistic Atlas of Fishermen of Northern Rio de Janeiro State); lexical variants used in Brazil and elsewhere; proverbs, phraseological units, and idioms involving spaces and water resources; multi-word expressions used to achieve intensifying effects in text; sentiment analysis in natural language processing through such expressions. Our focus is on understanding language as a symbolic source: variable, living, and permeable — capable of reflecting and transforming worldviews, cultural practices, and ways of learning and teaching about the waters that sustain life.
